Tanghalang Batingaw started to plant the seeds of passion for theater in Lyceum of the Philippines University way back on 1976 during the period of cultural paucity on campus. Founded and established by Oliver Andrade Pandile, an alumnus of LPU-Manila after being a graduate of Psychology is a stage actor, and were glorified in the spotlight at a very young age. He founded “Tanghalang Batingaw” on August 7, 1976. Eight elite founders took the former name of “Batingaw Ensemble” dedicated on uplifting our cultural identity as its heritage.

The native word “Batingaw” derived from a Malay root word as its origin which refers to a distinct kind of church bell used in pre-hispanic baranggay settlements which signals villagers and summons them to an important social gathering. “Tanghalang Batingaw” based in the Lyceum of the Philippines University is an exception to some short-lived campus theater groups. The group was established among noted campus theater organizations like the Tanghalang Ateneo and Dulaang Sibol, the UP Repertory Company and the UP Mobile Theater.

Tanghalang Batingaw is recognized by several national and international groups and cultural umbrellas namely; the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), Student Theater Foundation, Inc., Alyansa ng Aktibong Kabataan sa Sining(ALYANSA Inc.) , Anak Sining, National Youth Commission (NYC) and the Experimental Theater Foundation. It has also proven their worth in the theater and was always invited to perform in different festivities and gatherings. TB has joined the National Youth Theater (NYT) Festival on 6 February 1998 with the opening parade of Dula-daluyan ’98, the first NYT festival hosted by the CCP.
